What is the CogAT?
January 27th, 2012

For a parent who’s unfamiliar with the world of standardized testing, receiving notice that your child is about to take this test may well bring about the question, “Just what is the CogAT?” This is a common question, and thankfully the answer is simple. The CogAT is a tool used to assess students (K-12) in several different areas of cognitive ability. These ares include verbal, quantitative and non-verbal skills. The test takes approximately one hour, with certain age groups taking slightly less or more time.

The CogAT is usually administered in a group setting. However, for students who are expected to score very highly, this may not be the case. Gifted students are sometimes tested separately, so they can be given a higher level of the CogAT than their grade-level peers. The CogAT is recognized as one of the most reliable cognitive ability tests available today, and it’s trusted by a great number schools and educational professionals.
