Gifted children

Not all gifted children act in the same way.

This is why many educators find it very hard to identify gifted children without using gifted and talented IQ tests. For instance, there are children who are very fast learners and excel in almost every subject area but once given the IQ test, they only have average intelligence level.

On the other hand, there are those who perform fairly well in class but possess extraordinary talent especially in the arts. Examples of these are gifted children who can play musical instruments or have exemplary skills in drawing at a very young age. Even if they’re not able to get very high score in IQ tests, their special abilities are enough proof for them to be labeled as gifted.

Many schools employ varied gifted and talented IQ tests to test not only the intelligence of a child but other abilities that he or she may also have. Experts also suggest that parents should let their children undergo G&T testing before they enter school.

Many parents rely so much on teachers to help their gifted children grow and develop intellectually and socially. However, this shouldn’t be the case since teachers can only do so much to help all gifted children in their class. If there’s someone who should play the most important role in the learning process of children, it’s the parents.

Just because your child happened to be gifted doesn’t mean you can just let him or her learn by himself or herself. This is a common mistake many parents commit. On the contrary, you have an obligation to fulfill and that is to provide support and assistance to your gifted child.

There are many things you can do such as closely supervising homework and projects. You can also enroll your child in special classes to develop his or her craft. Gifted children may be independent learners but they also need to be assured that you are there for them.
