Gifted testing can be a stressful and complicated process. If you or your child’s teacher believes that your child is gifted, there are many advanced-placement, gifted and talented programs out there. These programs are a huge help to gifted students. Not only do they get to experience a classroom full of students on their own level, but they will actually be challenged by their lessons. Many gifted students feel like misfits, and often under-achieve simply because they’re bored.

If you notice that your child is performing at a very high level, it’s most likely a good idea to have them tested. Doing so can avoid a school career filled with frustration and alienation. If you believe that your child is gifted but she doesn’t perform well at school, testing is still a good choice. In many cases, it’s the only way to discern if she’s struggling with her lessons or bored by their simplicity.
If you’re not sure how to find out if your child is gifted, talk to a guidance counselor or behavioral psychologist at your child’s school. Or even talk to your child’s teacher – he or she may have some information about the best way to go about having your child tested.
It’s also a good idea to research your school district’s procedures for testing gifted children. Each school district and private school has its own way of placing children into gifted and talented classes, so you should educate yourself on this procedure before preparing your child for the test. The school district’s website may have some information; if not, speak to your child’s teacher or principal and get information about the process. You and your child will both feel much more comfortable going into the process knowing what to expect.
