SCAT Info for Specific Grades


TestingMom.com offers practice questions and materials for SCAT from Second through Eighth Grade. The SCAT is an “above level” test. It contains two sections, Verbal and Quantitative, each with 55 questions.

In order to do well on the SCAT Verbal Analogies section, students need strong vocabulary, verbal reasoning, and knowledge/information skills. In order to do well on the SCAT Quantitative section, students need to have a strong understanding of mathematical reasoning, math facts, calculations, and number operations.

  • Elementary Level – Children in 2nd – 3rd grade take the Elementary Level test, which has questions created at the 4th-5th grade level of achievement. The Elementary Level SCAT test is designed for younger students who are in the early stages of their academic journey. This level focuses on assessing the foundational skills and abilities of students in verbal and mathematical reasoning. The questions are intentionally created to be above the students’ current grade level to challenge their cognitive abilities and better understand their potential for advanced learning.
  • Intermediate Level – Children in 4th-5th grade take the Intermediate Level test, which has questions created at the 6th-8th grade level of achievement. The Intermediate Level SCAT test is designed for students in the middle of their elementary school years. This level further assesses students’ verbal and mathematical reasoning skills, providing insights into their ability to handle more complex problems and concepts. By presenting questions at the 6th-8th grade level of achievement, the test aims to identify students who demonstrate exceptional aptitude in these areas, which can help guide educators and parents in supporting their academic growth.
  • Advanced Level – Children in 6th grade and above take the Advanced Level test, which has questions created at the 9th-12th grade level. The Advanced Level SCAT test is designed for students who are transitioning from elementary to middle school, as well as those already in middle school and beyond. This level assesses students’ verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities at a higher level of complexity, reflecting the challenges they may face in high school and even early college coursework. The questions at this level are created at the 9th-12th grade level of achievement, providing a comprehensive understanding of students’ cognitive abilities and potential for success in advanced academic settings.
