What advice do you have on how to pick the right private school that is a good fit for your child and your family? It’s so hard to know after just a tour and a few visits which school is the best for you.

Trust your gut.  After touring and interviewing plus attending an open house you should be able to tell if you feel comfortable at any given school.  If this is not enough, try walking by a school as students arrive in the morning or at dismissal to get a better sense of the student population and parent body to get a better feel. And, of course, read absolutely everything that you can get your hands on about the schools, including, my book, The Manhattan Family Guide to Private and Selective Public Schools as well as each school’s websites, brochures and any other publication available. But, remember just because you fall in love with a particular school does not mean that the feelings are mutual.  Be realistic-if possible-and hedge your bets by applying widely and if you are overwhelmed or feel completely lost, hire a consultant.  Education First, (email victoria@nycedu1st.com), my consulting business as well as others, can help you maintain your sanity and make the most out of the experience.
