OLSAT Pictorial Reasoning

This section of the OLSAT test measures the comprehension of the relationships between various objects and the ability to infer their similarities and dissimilarities. It measures the ability to observe and understand various patterns and progressions through non-language based scenarios. The questions incorporate pictures instead of words, in a visual format. Students are expected to find the relationship between elements and/or objects in a pattern, and are asked to predict and create what the next level of the pattern will look like, thereby generalizing the rules they discover. This section evaluates a child’s ability to reason using different images and illustrations, to find similarities and differences, and to comprehend and continue progressions. Pictorial Reasoning consists of picture classification, picture analogy and picture series.

Picture Classification

These picture classification questions assess the ability to identify what does not belong among a group of objects. A student has to evaluate the differences and similarities in order to correctly answer the question. Picture Classification is on levels A-C of the OLSAT, which covers Kindergarten through 2nd grade.

Sample Question:

Look at the pictures in the boxes.  They go together in a certain way.  But one picture does not belong with these pictures.  Can you point to the picture that doesn’t belong?

2nd image over the bubble (goes fast, others move slowly) Level B

Picture Analogy

In these questions, students are presented with a 4-box matrix and must identify a relationship between the two objects in the first row. The student then applies this rule to the second row and chooses which object completes the second row relationship in the same way. Picture Analogy is on levels A-C of the OLSAT, which covers Kindergarten through 2nd grade.

Sample Question:

Look at the pictures in the top two boxes.  Do you see how they go together in a certain way?  Now look at the pictures on the side.  Which picture go with the picture on the bottom row the same way that the pictures in the top row go together?

3 – ingredients and cooked dish – Level B

Picture Series

In these questions, students are given a sequence of objects and are asked to identify/predict the object that comes next in the sequence, according to the underlying pattern. Picture Analogy is on levels A of the OLSAT, which covers Kindergarten. Picture Analogy is on level A of the OLSAT, which covers Kindergarten.

Sample Question:

Look at the pictures in the boxes.  Do you see how they go together in a certain way?  Choose the picture on the bottom that belongs in the empty box.

2 – the moon is waning – Level B
