Unlock Your Child’s Math Acceleration Potential

Texas Math CBE: Find Out If Your Child is Ready

Credit by Examination (CBE) is one option Texas school districts use to let students show mastery of grade-level or course math to skip ahead a year or two.

TestingMom can help families understand the gaps in their child’s readiness for these exams and close those gaps with targeted tutoring.

Texas Credit By Exam (CBE)

Are You Ready to Help Your Child Advance a Grade?

The Texas Credit By Exam (CBE), based on standards set by the Texas Education Agency, allows students to earn full grade-level credit by demonstrating mastery of TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) objectives.
This is not a placement or readiness test. It is a comprehensive mastery exam covering the entire grade level — not just selected topics.
To qualify for grade acceleration, students must typically score 80% or higher, showing a strong understanding across all major skill domains.
That means your child must be prepared not only to understand the material, but to apply it confidently, independently, and under exam conditions.
Proper preparation makes the difference between hoping to pass and being truly ready to advance a grade.

Who Should Consider CBE?

CBE may be right if your child:

Check Is academically ahead of their current grade
Check Has already mastered most grade-level Math skills
Check Needs subject acceleration
Check Is transitioning from homeschool or private school

What Score Is Required?

Standards are high, but achievable with the right strategy. Note that district policies may vary, but TEA generally maintains these thresholds.

80%
Grade Acceleration

Students seeking to skip a full grade level must demonstrate mastery with no prior instruction.

State Standard Requirement
70%
Credit with Prior Instruction

For students who have already taken the course but need to prove credit for advancement.

District Dependent

District policies may vary.

Why Preparation Matters

Most students don’t fail because they’re “not smart enough.” They struggle because of gaps in just 1–2 TEKS domains.

CBE covers the entire grade level, including:

  • Number and Operations
  • Algebraic Reasoning
  • Geometry and Measurement
  • Multi-step Word Problems
“Strong, targeted preparation significantly improves passing outcomes.”

Our Recommendation

Before scheduling the exam:

01

Take a TEKS-based diagnostic

Understand exactly where your child stands relative to the specific Texas standards for their target grade.

02

Identify weak skill domains

We pinpoint the specific TEKS gaps that could prevent your child from reaching the 80% threshold.

03

Prepare with focused one-to-one support

Targeted preparation that focuses only on the areas of need, saving time and building confidence.

Let’s evaluate if CBE is the right move and create a clear plan for your child’s success.

Guidance:

The practice questions on this diagnostic are based on questions your child will see on the real exam. This Diagnostic test will give you and your child a good idea of the difficulty of the tests at the desired target grade level. Most students complete these diagnostics in 25-50 minutes but there is no time limit. Based on your child’s score, we will give you a recommended study plan.
