Practice Test Questions for OLSAT® Test – Otis-Lennon School Ability Test®, Eighth Edition®

Practice Test Questions for OLSAT® Test – Otis-Lennon School Ability Test®, Eighth Edition® reflects the surnames of two people: Arthur Sinton Otis, Ph.D. (who died before OLSAT test was published) and publishing executive and editor, Roger Thomas Lennon, Ph.D.,

There are seven different levels of the OLSAT test designed for use from kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, sixth grade all the way up to 12th grade. The OLSAT test serves as an economical way to widely assess gifted and talented children in the early years. The OLSAT test is currently being used by the New York City DOE for admissions into the gifted and talented program in NYC.

The level A OLSAT test, the OLSAT test’s lowest level, is designed to assess school abilities of kindergartners but it assesses areas that are not universally taught. For example, the OLSAT test does not assess reading and math abilities. Some educators use the level A OLSAT test to assess preschoolers, but, for three-year-olds and four year olds, require only 40 of the 60 OLSAT test questions. For five-year-olds, all 60 OLSAT test questions are given. OLSAT test scores are measured against peers in age groups of 3-month bands. For example, children born October 1 through January 1 are compared with other children taking the OLSAT test within the same age range

The OLSAT test includes sections such as detecting likenesses and differences, recalling words and numbers, defining words, following directions, classifying, establishing sequence, solving arithmetic problems, and completing analogies. The intent of the OLSAT test is to assess thinking skills and provide an understanding of a student’s relative strengths and weaknesses in performing a variety of reasoning tasks. The OLSAT test is designed to get a measure of your child’s ability level. It’s important for parents to practice OLSAT test prep questions if the child has never been exposed to the concepts on the OLSAT test.

Incorrect answers are not penalized on the OLSAT test, so guessing on questions on the OLSAT test will not hurt a student’s score for the test. Guessing incorrectly on the OLSAT test will yield the same score as leaving the question blank. The OLSAT test is structured so that difficult questions are immediately followed by easier ones and vice-a-versa. This prevents students from being discouraged by tough OLSAT test questions towards the end of test sections. The total score of the OLSAT test is called the School Ability Index (SAI) and is comprised of a verbal and nonverbal score.

Here is more information for the OLSAT test for each grade level:

The OLSAT has Verbal Reasoning questions and Verbal comprehension questions.

If you are a New York City parent and your child is taking the NYC gifted and talented test find out more about how the OLSAT is administered.

The 8th edition of the OLSAT test is currently being used and the 9th edition of the OLSAT test is soon to be released. With the historical reference of the OLSAT test:

  • 1st edition — Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (published August 13, 1979)
  • 2nd edition — Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (published September 10, 1982)
  • 6th edition — Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (published November 15, 1988)
  • 7th edition — Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (published October 23, 1995)
  • 8th edition — Otis-Lennon School Ability Test – currently being used

CAN A CHILDREN retake a olsat tst on 2nd garde for a high score.

TestingMom.com says:

For New York City gifted and talented program the child can retake the OLSAT test and Bracken test the following year. If your child is in second grade this year you can register for the OLSAT test and Bracken test on the New York City Department of Ed site in mid-October 2010 for the OLSAT testing that takes place in January and February of 2011. The DOE does supply OLSAT sample tests and Bracken practice test for parents in New York City.

Hi Karen,
Thank again for the great seminar last night.
Above you mentioned that “There are seven different levels of the OLSAT test designed for use from kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, sixth grade all the way up to 12th grade. The OLSAT test serves as an economical way to widely assess gifted and talented children in the early years. The OLSAT test is currently being used by the New York City DOE for admissions into the gifted and talented program in NYC.” But as far as I know from the booklets of DOE, they only test until 1st grade for next year’s 2nd grade placement. Am I missing something here?

susan says:

Hi Inci – thanks for coming last night and we’re glad you enjoyed it! Help us get the word out about TestingMom.com so parents know there are experts available that they can partner with for their child’s testing needs.

The information you see on the OLSAT isn’t for NYC specifically but an overview of the OLSAT test as a whole. This test isn’t only used for NYC gifted and talented programs but used for many school districts across the United States. Many schools in the USA use the OLSAT to test upper grades from junior high through high school. Here’s the breakdown of the test levels for the OLSAT:

OLSAT level A – pre-k to kindergarten
OLSAT level B – first grade
OLSAT level C – second grade
OLSAT level D – third grade
OLSAT level E – fourth grade and fifth grade
OLSAT level F – sixth grade through eighth grade
OLSAT level G – ninth grade through twelth grade – high school

Mom of 3 says:

Do you have any sample tests I can purchase to review with my child prior to his test tomorrow?

CB says:

Hi,
Love your site!
Two questions:
1) My son is in 1st grade now. If we test our son in April / May, would he take the level he is in currently (Level B for 1st grade) or the next level (Level C for Second Grade)?
2) We live in PA. Can you refer me to where I would with DOE for sample tests?

Thanks very much,
CB

TestingMom.com says:

We’re glad you found our site too! If your son is in first grade now he will take the OLSAT test level B. Level C OLSAT is given to students in the second grade going into third grade. You’ll need to contact your DOE office to find out about their OLSAT sample tests, if they have them available.

lindsay says:

hello my 5 year old son just took the level a practice test and got them all right? Are the practice test questions easier or does this mean he will score well?

TestingMom.com says:

Which OLSAT practice test did your son take? If it’s from the NYC dept of education web site then those sample questions are much easier than what’s on the actual Otis-Lennon test given for the NYC gifted and talented program.

My child will be tested for Gifted Child Programm in Chicago Public School System for First Grade Level. Which is the most appropriate testin method does Chicago Public School follow? is it OLSAT? Also, I registered for this program, where does he start? he is currently at kindergarten and will be tested for Ist grade in March 2012.

TestingMom.com says:

Hi – the OLSAT test is the best bet! Chicago doesn’t tell parents the name of the G&T test for Chicago but from what we gathered from our sources the Gifted Program in the Chicago Public School System has the same concepts tested as those on the Otis-Lennon School Abilities Test, commonly called the OLSAT. Thanks for your question!

Why school makes secret out of OLSAT score?
Our school does not make OLSAT score availabe to parents.
I wonder if this is legal practice.
It makes me think about corruption in the school system.
Is there official way to request OLSAT score?

My daughter will be taking the OLSAT soon for placement into her school’s gifted and talented program. She started 2nd grade on August 23, 2012, but she is only 6 years old (date of birth 11/20/2005). Which level of the OLSAT should she be given and why? The school told me that she will be given the 2nd grade level test because she is currently enrolled in 2nd grade and that the difficulty level doesn’t matter because the scores are normed by age not grade level. However, I am concerned that she may not test well if she is not taking the appropriate level of the OLSAT. Hence, I am contacting you for more information. I appreciate your help on this matter.

Cole says:

What is the purpose of practicing for a test that is supposed to measure individual year to year progress or help assess potential gifted and talented candidates? Here’s a novel idea…..let the child take the test then assess their abilities, not what what you can cram into their head. I’ve never read such a ridiculous group of requests from parents who pretend to want the best for their child. If you were really concerned about the mental growth of your child you would stimulate creative play and encourage social development with peers. Cognitive and emotional development through play has proven to beneficial to children. Read The Power of Play: Learning What Comes Naturally by David Elkind, PhD. Let your child soar without adding pressure to perform well on a test.

Davey says:

Hi! It says that there is the the same level and form of OLSAT 7 for Grade 4 and Grade 5. My students who is currently Grade 5 took OLSAT 7 Level E Form 3 when they were in grade 4 last school year. My question is do I have to administer the test again since they are in grade 5 now although the same test will be given to them??
I hope you can help me with my concern here. Thank you so.

TestingMom.com says:

It depends on who is administering the OLSAT test to the student and the school requirements. OLSAT Level E is for 4th and 5th grade students so it would be most likely the same test but please check with your school and their policy on the administration and scoring for the OLSAT test for your specific situation.

Vin says:

For entering second grade most schools administer the OLSAT Level B but please double-check with your school to make sure that’s the case.
