OLSAT Test – Otis-Lennon School Ability Test
The name Otis-Lennon reflects the surnames of two people: Arthur Sinton Otis, Ph.D. (who died before OLSAT test was published) and publishing executive and editor, Roger Thomas Lennon, Ph.D.,
There are seven different levels of the OLSAT test designed for use from kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, sixth grade all the way up to 12th grade. The OLSAT test serves as an economical way to widely assess gifted and talented children in the early years. The OLSAT test is currently being used by the New York City DOE for admissions into the gifted and talented program in NYC.
The level A OLSAT, the OLSAT test’s lowest level, is designed to assess school abilities of kindergartners but it assesses areas that are not universally taught. For example, the OLSAT test does not assess reading and math abilities. Some educators use the level A OLSAT test to assess preschoolers, but, for three-year-olds and four year olds, require only 40 of the 60 OLSAT questions. For five-year-olds, all 60 OLSAT questions are given. OLSAT scores are measured against peers in age groups of 3-month bands. For example, children born October 1 through January 1 are compared with other children taking the OLSAT within the same age range
The OLSAT test includes sections such as detecting likenesses and differences, recalling words and numbers, defining words, following directions, classifying, establishing sequence, solving arithmetic problems, and completing analogies. The intent of the OLSAT test is to assess thinking skills and provide an understanding of a student’s relative strengths and weaknesses in performing a variety of reasoning tasks. The OLSAT test is designed to get a measure of your child’s ability level. It’s important for parents to practice OLSAT test prep questions if the child has never been exposed to the concepts on the OLSAT test.
Incorrect answers are not penalized on the OLSAT test, so guessing on questions on the OLSAT test will not hurt a student’s score for the test. Guessing incorrectly on the OLSAT test will yield the same score as leaving the question blank. The OLSAT test is structured so that difficult questions are immediately followed by easier ones and vice-a-versa. This prevents students from being discouraged by tough OLSAT questions towards the end of test sections. The total score of the OLSAT is called the School Ability Index (SAI) and is comprised of a verbal and nonverbal score.
The 8th edition of the OLSAT is currently being used and the 9th edition of the OLSAT is soon to be released. With the historical reference of the OLSAT test:
- 1st edition — Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (published August 13, 1979)
- 2nd edition — Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (published September 10, 1982)
- 6th edition — Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (published November 15, 1988)
- 7th edition — Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (published October 23, 1995)
- 8th edition — Otis-Lennon School Ability Test – currently being used

CAN A CHILDREN retake a olsat tst on 2nd garde for a high score.
For New York City gifted and talented program the child can retake the OLSAT test and Bracken test the following year. If your child is in second grade this year you can register for the OLSAT test and Bracken test on the New York City Department of Ed site in mid-October 2010 for the OLSAT testing that takes place in January and February of 2011. The DOE does supply OLSAT sample tests and Bracken practice test for parents in New York City.

Above you mentioned that “There are seven different levels of the OLSAT test designed for use from kindergarten, first grade, second grade, third grade, fourth grade, fifth grade, sixth grade all the way up to 12th grade. The OLSAT test serves as an economical way to widely assess gifted and talented children in the early years. The OLSAT test is currently being used by the New York City DOE for admissions into the gifted and talented program in NYC.” But as far as I know from the booklets of DOE, they only test until 1st grade for next year’s 2nd grade placement. Am I missing something here?
Could you send me sample test questions for the olsat . At that time I will decide to upgrade my membership and get more questions. Thank you. Susan

The information you see on the OLSAT isn’t for NYC specifically but an overview of the OLSAT test as a whole. This test isn’t only used for NYC gifted and talented programs but used for many school districts across the United States. Many schools in the USA use the OLSAT to test upper grades from junior high through high school. Here’s the breakdown of the test levels for the OLSAT:
OLSAT level A – pre-k to kindergarten
OLSAT level B – first grade
OLSAT level C – second grade
OLSAT level D – third grade
OLSAT level E – fourth grade and fifth grade
OLSAT level F – sixth grade through eighth grade
OLSAT level G – ninth grade through twelth grade – high school

You indicated in an earlier post that you do not currently focus on OLSAT tests for 5th graders entering 6th grade. Where can I obtain information specifically on those middle school testing models?
I’m not sure where to recommend you for upper grades for the OLSAT test. I’d recommend doing a Google search and see what pops up.
Can you advise which OLSAT and BSRA books are highly recommended for my 4 yr old testing in January for kindergarten placement? There are so many publications out there…BrightKids? Arrington?
Hi Christie – Karen just posted an extensive OLSAT and Bracken test prep book video reviews from all the major producers of the products on our TestingMom.com blog!. She reviewed the following products including her own amazing IQ Fun Park Game that parents are giving rave reviews!

Hi, Can you recommend a good resource to get OLSAT prep for 3rd graders? My son is taking his test in a few days. I asked 2 different teachers about the test and they told me you can’t really prep for it; then I get the notice for the test and Google the name, info galore… frustrating. Thanks!
Please send me some sample of test questions for my daughter. She wil be taking the test in a few days. We have a few of the sample questions but now she has all the questions and answers memorized. So we need some new questions to continue to practice.
My children attend Hudson county school system. This week actually today was the testing date and I was not made aware. Now, are student tested every year?
Is pearson test prep helpful? Would you please send me some olsat test samples too? Thanks!
Hi – email us at email@example.com with more details on your situation with the OLSAT test so we can respond appropriately. Thanks!
Not sure on the Pearson Test Prep – we haven’t reviewed their products as it pertains to the OLSAT test.
We have OLSAT sample practice questions on the home page of TestingMom.com! pre-k, kindergarten, first grade, second grade and now third grade! More grades coming soon so stay tuned!
Do you have any sample tests I can purchase to review with my child prior to his test tomorrow?
Love your site!
1) My son is in 1st grade now. If we test our son in April / May, would he take the level he is in currently (Level B for 1st grade) or the next level (Level C for Second Grade)?
2) We live in PA. Can you refer me to where I would with DOE for sample tests?
Thanks very much,
We’re glad you found our site too! If your son is in first grade now he will take the OLSAT test level B. Level C OLSAT is given to students in the second grade going into third grade. You’ll need to contact your DOE office to find out about their OLSAT sample tests, if they have them available.

Hi! Could I also request some sample questions of the OLSAT-8 for a rising 2nd grader? My child will complete first grade in June of this year (2011) and is scheduled to be tested in July as a possible candidate for gifted education in 2nd grade. THANK YOU!
My son will be taking the OLSAT test for third grade next week and I would like to let him practice with some sample questions. Thank you.
My kid will be taking the OLSAT test for 4th grade next week and I would like to let her practice with some sample questions. Thank you for your help.
hello my 5 year old son just took the level a practice test and got them all right? Are the practice test questions easier or does this mean he will score well?
Which OLSAT practice test did your son take? If it’s from the NYC dept of education web site then those sample questions are much easier than what’s on the actual Otis-Lennon test given for the NYC gifted and talented program.
Let us know about your experience with the OLSAT test
I am writing a paper for my Master’s Degree on the OLSAT and wanted to see if you could name a few school districts currently using this specific assessment?
I just got my daughter’s OLSAT National PR score it is 69.
I do not know how to get her SAI from her percentile score.
Could you help me out?
Thanks in advance,
Can you please send me some sample OLSAT questions for 1st grade. My son will be taking the test in a few days. Thanks!!!
My child will be tested for Gifted Child Programm in Chicago Public School System for First Grade Level. Which is the most appropriate testin method does Chicago Public School follow? is it OLSAT? Also, I registered for this program, where does he start? he is currently at kindergarten and will be tested for Ist grade in March 2012.
Hi – the OLSAT test is the best bet! Chicago doesn’t tell parents the name of the G&T test for Chicago but from what we gathered from our sources the Gifted Program in the Chicago Public School System has the same concepts tested as those on the Otis-Lennon School Abilities Test, commonly called the OLSAT. Thanks for your question!
please send me a sample of kindergarden and 2nd grade gifted talent test ( olsha and bracken ) thankyou…
Can you please e mail me OLSAT tests for first grade. I am already signed up.
Why school makes secret out of OLSAT score?
Our school does not make OLSAT score availabe to parents.
I wonder if this is legal practice.
It makes me think about corruption in the school system.
Is there official way to request OLSAT score?
Please send test questions for kindergarden admissions. thank you.
Hi, Somebody told me that in New york city OLSAT exam to enter in gifted and talented school upto only second grade , thirg graders can not take this , could u pls tell me is it true .
Hi Testing Mom
I live in California I am a member.my son will do the OLSAT test in third grade this year .I didn’t find enough OLSAT questions ,I feel disappointed. Can you please sent questions by email
Can u plz send me some free olsat question for practise .thanks
My daughter will be taking the OLSAT soon for placement into her school’s gifted and talented program. She started 2nd grade on August 23, 2012, but she is only 6 years old (date of birth 11/20/2005). Which level of the OLSAT should she be given and why? The school told me that she will be given the 2nd grade level test because she is currently enrolled in 2nd grade and that the difficulty level doesn’t matter because the scores are normed by age not grade level. However, I am concerned that she may not test well if she is not taking the appropriate level of the OLSAT. Hence, I am contacting you for more information. I appreciate your help on this matter.
Can you send me some free OLSAT questions for practice (4th-5th Grade). Thanks
My kid will be taking the OLSAT test for 4th grade next week and I would like to let her practice with some sample
Do you know what is the difference between OLSAT 7th editionand the 8th edition? My son will be tested aginst the 7th edition and it looks like the questions on your site are based on the 8th edition…
OLSAT 8 edition is the most recent version of the test given. There is little difference between OLSAT 7 and 8 so you can practice with our Otis-Lennon School Abilities sample questions.
Can you, please, send me sample questions for NNAT and OLSAT? My daughter entered 3 grade.
I enrolled to the website but have not received any sample tests through email.
Can you pelase email the samples for kindergardener?
All of our practice questions for the OLSAT test are on the site. For the free practice questions click on the red “buy now” button at the top of the page. The sample questions for the Otis-Lennon School Abilities test are there.
Can you please send me some questions for the OLSAT?
I signed up for your program today to assist my 5th grader prepare for th OLSAT exam to enter a 6th grade gifted program. As I am reading the comments, I see that you mentioned that you do not have prep materials for 5th – 6th graders. Please inform me if this information is correct. When I initially signed up I mentioned that I need review materials for my 5th grader on taking the OLSAT exam. Thank You.
Yes, we have practice questions for the OLSAT 5th and 6th grade.
OK. When will I get practice questions for my son. He is currently in the fifth grade. Should we do the 5th grade or sixth grade practice exams or is there a combination practice exam.
Can you plz display som sample questions for OLSAT test for 5th grade? It would be very appreciative. My daugter is very nervous about that test. She is taking the test on December 8,2012. plz help me and her out. thx for your cooperation.
Hi,I live in Chicago and my three daughter will be tested for the upcoming school year, I have daughters being tested to enter in 1st grade and fourth grade and I have another daughter that will be going to cps 7th grade program how can this help if I just pay for the monthly program and not the online games? Will I get worksheets or just questions?
All of our questions are viewable and printable – as long as you have a printer you can print our questions and they are worksheets. Or you can do the online games that have the questions in an online format. Good luck with the CPS test in Chicago!
How longs is the OLSAT for each grade? How many questions are there? How is it that kids in some grades take the exact same test as kids in other grades? Confused about how this whole thing works!!
Thanks in advance,
how can we get our 100 free questions. we have been on the testingmom website for at least 5 hours trying to find a way to get 100 questions for my daughters 4th grade olsat test!

Thanks for this website. I have a Kindergartner and a second grader. Can you please send me practice test for those grades; that is level A and C.
My daughter is in second grade. I’m considering getting an OLSAT preparatory book for her. What would you recommend? Also, should I get the one that says “Third Grade Entry”? Or should I just get those labeled second grade?
