The Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) Star Early Literacy Assessment is an adaptive online screening and progress-monitoring assessment used by many Florida schools to measure the early literacy and foundational reading skills of young learners. It helps teachers understand each child’s current reading development, identify students who may benefit from additional instruction, and monitor growth throughout the school year.
The FAST Star Early Literacy assessment is commonly administered to students in Pre-K through Grade 3, although individual districts determine exactly how and when the assessment is used. Understanding Your Child’s Scores
The FAST Star Early Literacy assessment provides several types of scores that help teachers and families monitor progress.
Scaled Score
Students receive a Scaled Score, which reflects both the number of correct answers and the difficulty of the questions answered correctly.
Scaled scores allow educators to compare student growth over time, even as children move from one grade level to the next.
Skill Set Scores
The report also includes Skill Set Scores that measure performance within individual literacy domains.
These scores help identify strengths as well as areas where additional instruction may be beneficial.
National Norm Information
Many reports compare a student’s performance with a national sample of students at the same grade level, allowing families to better understand how their child’s reading development compares with national averages.
Percentile Rank
A student’s Percentile Rank indicates how their performance compares with other students in the same grade nationwide.
For example, a percentile rank of 75 means the student performed as well as or better than approximately 75% of students in the national comparison group.
