Description

Keeping young students’ attention the weeks/days of summer break can be difficult.  Join us for an engaging, hands-on science activities that engage students’ interest and keep them focused on learning. In this class I will share some of my favorite summer science treats, experiments, and activities. They are easy to set up and require simple materials to complete.

Learning Objectives

  • use simple experiments that teach students about chemical reactions and states of matter
  • practice making predictions and testing them
  • practice recording data and interpreting results

What will students do in this course?

  • Students will conduct several experiments with icy treats to facilitate a conversation about states of matter and forms of energy. Then we will taste test popsicles to learn about the scientific method.
  • Student will take some gummy bears for a 'swim' to learn about osmosis. (This experiment will need to be continued after class.) While 'swimming' we will also explore density and buoyancy.
  • Students make worms dance and they learn about chemical reactions.
  • Students will explore the science of solutions and with colorful candy. They may be surprised by some of the results!

Instructor's Bio:

I have been an educator for over 15 years. My classroom is active and engaging. I adjust my teaching, as needed, to accommodate the needs of each individual learner. Customization is key in my classroom. While knowledge is critical to learning, it can be obtained readily whereas understanding how to learn can seem elusive. Building rapport and connecting with my students enables me to draw them into learning and my students are rewarded frequently for their efforts so that they stay motivated. I act as the lead learner by modeling ‘how’ to learn rather than simply presenting content.

Educational Background, Degrees, Licenses:

  • B.S. Biology
  • TESOL certificate, VIPKid

Favorite Quote:

  • “ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.”  Proverbs 25:11

Fun Facts:

  • I love music, reading, cooking, and planning events and parties.
  • I am known for singing songs that match just about every situation and for ‘overdoing it’ with my cooking and party themes.

Shannon K. says:

Angela has the patience of a saint. She is so engaging with the kids and excellent in her communication. It was really fun and interesting and I learned the scientific method. The scientific method is the question, research, hypothesis, experiment, make an observation, analyze data and conclusion. I had fun seeing how the candy made this come alive.

Kelly says:

Angela is awesome; our favorite instructor. My son loved it and was less than happy that we had to end early because he had another class I booked on top by accident. She is great with kids. Acknowledged everyone, and let the kids take turns to share things with her. I asked my son to give me one word to describe the class, he said, \"awesome!\"

Hema I. says:

The instructor Ms. Angela was really friendly and always engaged with the kids. My son really loved it! He really enjoyed the class and learned something new. He said Ms. Angela was a very good teacher.

Tian says:

My daughter loved the class. She wants to take another class from Ms. Angela. Teacher Angela was very engaging. We are looking forward to having our daughter learn from her again.

Eileen says:

Both my children enjoyed the class, they thought the instructor was very nice and fun.
