The Culture Encounters series is a fun way to practice analytical reading skills with high-interest topics. In this course, learners will read about medieval Japan and complete engaging activities & projects that enhance comprehension.
Syllabus:
Lesson 1: Shoguns & the Feudal System of Medieval Japan

Reading: Narrative Nonfiction Text about the Feudal System with Discussion (Analyzing Point of View)
Hands-On Activity: Create a Flipbook of the Different Social Classes and Summarize Key Details from Video and Reading
Lesson 2: Blades for Hire: Ninjas vs. Samurais
Audio/Video Introduction: Short Video Compares and Contrasts Ninjas and Samurais
Reading: Reading about Ninjas with Discussion (Compare and Contrast the Missions, Clothing & Weapons of Ninjas and Samurais)
Hands-On Activity: Outfit the Warrior-A "Paper Doll"-Like Activity where Learners Match Clothing & Weapons to the Correct Warrior
Lesson 3: Small but Mighty: How Japan Repelled the Mongol Empire
Audio/Video Introduction: Short Video about the Strength & Success of the Sprawling Mongol Empire
Reading: Reading about How Japanese Samurai Repelled the Mongols with Discussion (Causes and Effects) Hands-On Activity: Maps of the Mongol Empire & Medieval Japan
Note: The videos and readings will be presented on screen. A printable copy of the readings and the hands-on activities will be provided to parents ahead of time in a Google Drive folder. Learners will be expected to bring the printed hands-on activity with any cut-out parts already cut and ready to attach. Staples, tape, or glue may be required.
Additional Note:
Some readings and videos will mention war and battles in a general, nonspecific manner. Although there will not be any visuals or texts describing violence with any gore or intricate detail, parents are urged to consider whether these general topics will be upsetting to their learners. Third-party materials do not require accounts.

Creative Writing & Writer's Notebook. Trained in A.P. English Language & Composition. I have a passion for writing and hope that I can instill that passion in my students.
