Description

This online ELA class is designed to strengthen 4th and 5th-grade students' reading comprehension and writing skills in preparation for standardized exams. Students will learn strategies for identifying the main idea, author's purpose, supporting evidence, and theme in reading passages. They will also explore writing mechanics tested on standardized tests and have the opportunity to practice creative writing.

Learning Objectives:

Identify the main idea and supporting details in a variety of reading passages.
Analyze an author's purpose for writing a text (to inform, entertain, persuade, etc.).
Find textual evidence to support conclusions about a reading passage.
Determine the theme or central message of a literary work.
Apply correct writing mechanics, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling, in their writing.
Engage in creative writing exercises to develop their personal expression and storytelling skills.

*Unfortunately, this class does not allow drop-ins. Each class builds upon prior courses.

Instructor Bio:

Hi, I'm Joseph! To keep my students engaged during sessions, I lead with questions and discuss the topics being covered rather than lectures. My goal is to keep lessons fun and interesting regardless of a child's age or the subject. I value my students' curiosity and individual interests, and always praise them for their efforts, questions, and sense of humor. I firmly believe in developing long-term relationships with my students based on mutual trust, respect, and appreciation for each other's idiosyncrasies.
