Description

This course introduces American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-gestural language used by Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. ASL is used not only in the United States but also in other countries around the world. Did you know early exposure to a new language can give students an early head start in acquiring a new language skill? It can enhance their cognitive abilities, improve overall communication skills, and foster a greater appreciation for diversity. Studies have shown that learning a visual-spatial language like ASL can positively affect mental development, enhancing spatial awareness, problem-solving skills, and memory retention.

Students will learn the basics of ASL grammar, vocabulary, and cultural elements. ASL is a social language that promotes interaction and collaboration. By learning ASL, students develop vital interpersonal skills and build connections with others. Learning ASL encourages empathy, patience, and compassion while broadening students' perspectives and introducing them to a global community of sign language users. Proficiency in ASL can enhance students' resumes and open up career opportunities in fields such as education, social work, interpreting, and healthcare, where knowledge of ASL is highly valued. Don't miss out on the chance to learn this global language!

Learning Outcomes:

  • Basic ASL Proficiency: Students will acquire basic proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL), including the ability to understand and produce common signs, fingerspelling, and simple sentences, enabling them to engage in essential communication with Deaf individuals.
  • Fingerspelling Skills: Students will develop proficiency in fingerspelling, both receptively (understanding fingerspelled words) and expressively (producing fingerspelled words), enhancing their ability to communicate and comprehend spelling-related information in ASL.
  • Vocabulary Acquisition: Students will build a foundational vocabulary of common signs and expressions in ASL, enabling them to express basic ideas, needs, and emotions in sign language.
  • Conversational Skills: Students will develop conversational skills in ASL, allowing them to engage in basic conversations, exchange greetings, introduce themselves, and participate in everyday interactions within the Deaf community.
  • Cultural Awareness: Students will gain awareness of Deaf culture, history, and identity, as well as cultural norms, etiquette, and values within the Deaf community, fostering respect, empathy, and inclusivity in their interactions with Deaf individuals. ASL is not just a language; it's also a vibrant culture with its traditions, history, and community. Learning ASL helps students gain insight into Deaf culture and develop cultural competency.

  • Visual-Gestural Communication: Students will become proficient in using visual-gestural communication strategies unique to ASL, including spatial referencing, facial expressions, and body language, enhancing their ability to convey meaning effectively in sign language.
