Class Details:
This course introduces American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-gestural language used by Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. ASL is used not only in the United States but also in other countries around the world. Did you know early exposure to a new language can give students an early head start in acquiring a new language skill? It can enhance their cognitive abilities, improve overall communication skills, and foster a greater appreciation for diversity. Studies have shown that learning a visual-spatial language like ASL can positively affect mental development, enhancing spatial awareness, problem-solving skills, and memory retention.
Students will learn the basics of ASL grammar, vocabulary, and cultural elements. ASL is a social language that promotes interaction and collaboration. By learning ASL, students develop vital interpersonal skills and build connections with others. Learning ASL encourages empathy, patience, and compassion while broadening students' perspectives and introducing them to a global community of sign language users. Proficiency in ASL can enhance students' resumes and open up career opportunities in fields such as education, social work, interpreting, and healthcare, where knowledge of ASL is highly valued. Don't miss out on the chance to learn this global language!
