Project Arrow

Indian Prairie School District 204 (IPSD 204) offers advanced learning opportunities for academically gifted students through its Project Arrow program. Beginning in elementary school and continuing through middle and high school, Project Arrow is designed to challenge students who demonstrate exceptional academic ability, advanced reasoning skills, and a need for accelerated instruction.

The program emphasizes critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, communication, and independent learning while providing students with opportunities to work alongside other advanced learners.

What Is Project Arrow?

Project Arrow is the district’s gifted education program for students who qualify through a comprehensive identification process. Rather than relying on a single assessment, the district considers multiple data sources to identify students whose educational needs extend beyond the general curriculum.

Project Arrow serves students from Grade 2 through Grade 8, with advanced coursework available throughout high school.

Elementary Gifted Identification (Grades 2–5)

Students are considered for Project Arrow through a multiple-measures screening process.

District 204 typically reviews information such as:

• Cognitive ability assessments
• Achievement assessments
• Classroom performance
• Teacher recommendations
• Additional academic indicators

Historically, the district has used assessments such as the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT®) and Iowa Assessments as part of the identification process. While these assessments remain important tools, eligibility decisions are based on multiple criteria rather than a single test score.

Students who demonstrate exceptional reasoning ability and academic achievement may be invited to participate in Project Arrow.

Middle School Identification (Grades 6–8)

Project Arrow continues in middle school through separate Reading and Mathematics strands.

Reading Strand

Students are considered using multiple data points that may include:

• Reading achievement
• Cognitive ability
• Teacher recommendations
• Classroom performance
• Other district assessments

Reading instruction emphasizes:

• Advanced literature
• Analytical thinking
• Sophisticated writing
• Research skills
• Discussion and interpretation of complex texts

Mathematics Strand

Students demonstrating exceptional mathematical aptitude may qualify for the accelerated mathematics pathway.

Advanced students may progress through:

• Pre-Algebra
• Algebra I
• Geometry

at an accelerated pace, preparing them for higher-level mathematics in high school.

Placement decisions are based on multiple measures and district guidelines.
