New York State (NYS) Assessments
The New York State Testing Program includes annual assessments that measure how well students are mastering the New York State Next Generation Learning Standards in English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science. These assessments help teachers, families, and schools understand each student’s academic progress and identify areas where additional instruction or enrichment may be beneficial.
Students in Grades 3–8 participate in statewide assessments each spring. While test scores provide valuable information about student learning, they are just one of many measures used to guide instruction and support student success.

Which Assessments Do Students Take?
Students participate in the following statewide assessments:

English Language Arts (ELA)
The ELA assessment measures a student’s ability to:
- Read literary and informational texts
- Determine main ideas and supporting details
- Make inferences using evidence
- Analyze vocabulary in context
- Compare ideas across multiple texts
- Write clearly using evidence from reading
- Revise and edit written responses
Mathematics
The Mathematics assessment evaluates skills such as:
- Number sense
- Operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals
- Algebraic thinking
- Geometry
- Measurement
- Data analysis
- Multi-step problem solving
- Mathematical reasoning
Science
The Grade 5 and Grade 8 Science assessments measure students’ understanding of:
- Life Science
- Physical Science
- Earth and Space Science
- Engineering and design practices
- Scientific inquiry
- Data analysis
Computer-Based Testing
Most New York school districts now administer the state assessments using computer-based testing (CBT), although some districts may continue using paper-based assessments where appropriate.
Computer-based testing allows students to answer questions electronically and enables schools to receive results more efficiently.
Are the Tests Timed?
New York State assessments are untimed.
Students may work at their own pace during the regular school day, provided they are working productively. Removing strict time limits allows students to demonstrate what they know without the added pressure of racing against the clock.
How Are the Tests Scored?
Students receive:
- A Scale Score
- A Performance Level (Levels 1–4)
Performance Levels are generally interpreted as:
- Level 1: Beginning understanding
- Level 2: Partial understanding
- Level 3: Meets grade-level expectations
- Level 4: Excels beyond grade-level expectations
Schools use these results, along with classroom performance and other assessments, to help guide instruction and monitor student progress.

Why does my child take the New York State assessments?
The assessments help teachers understand each student’s strengths and learning needs while measuring progress toward the New York State learning standards.
Are test scores used to determine promotion?
State assessment scores are only one part of a student’s academic record. Promotion and placement decisions are made by local school districts using multiple measures, including classroom performance and teacher evaluations.
When are score reports available?
Schools typically receive score reports several months after testing. Families receive reports through their school district, either in print or electronically.
Are accommodations available?
Yes. Students with disabilities and multilingual learners may receive accommodations that are documented in their Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504 Plan, or language support plan.
Can parents opt their child out?
New York parents may choose to have their child not participate in the state assessments. Families should contact their child’s school for district-specific procedures and information.
