Karen and Michael Answer Questions of the Week

(Audio Teleseminar – Nov. 4, 2010) – Top 1% and Top 5%

Preparing a child for gifted-and-talented testing or private school admissions can feel overwhelming for many parents. In this audio teleseminar, Karen Quinn and Michael McCurdy answer some of the most common questions parents have about helping young children feel confident, prepared, and ready to succeed during the testing and admissions process.

The discussion focuses on real-life concerns from parents of preschool and elementary-aged children, especially those applying to competitive gifted programs and private schools. Karen and Michael share practical strategies for reducing test anxiety, improving focus and stamina, and helping children become more comfortable interacting with unfamiliar adults during testing situations and school interviews.

Parents will also receive guidance on developmental expectations for young learners, including what children may need to know for assessments such as the Bracken School Readiness Assessment. The seminar also addresses questions from bilingual families trying to determine the best language for their child to use during testing.

In addition, Karen and Michael discuss admissions competitiveness for highly selective gifted programs, including the Hunter College Elementary School gifted and talented program, and what scores parents were hearing about during that admissions cycle.

Questions covered in this tele-seminar:

1. How do you help a child who is shy to warm up around adults for testing purposes?

2. What does my child need to know before a school interview, and how best to prepare?

3. How do I build up my child’s testing stamina for the test that takes over an hour?

4. Does my 4-year-old need to know all digits 0 to 99 for the Bracken?

5. What is the score needed to get into the Hunter G&T program this year?

6. My child speaks 2 languages. What’s the best language to take the test in?
