Kindergarten Test Prep Tips for Parents

posted by Karen Quinn, The Testing Mom - March 1st, 2013

As a parent, you know how important a kindergarten test can be. It can determine what school your child goes to, which program he ends up in, and can even affect his career trajectory later in life. If your child is taking a kindergarten test you just can’t stand in one corner and let him or her handle everything. On the contrary, you have to play your part as a responsible and supportive parent by helping your child get ready for kindergarten testing.

Here are some tips on how to help your child prepare:

Read to your child constantly to develop comprehension and vocabulary. Even if he or she doesn’t know how to read yet, reading out loud to them can help familiarize them with letters and their sounds. Asking questions afterward can also improve listening skills and reasoning power.

Provide materials like coloring books and picture books when reviewing for a kindergarten test. Children enjoy doing something with their hands. You can teach them how to hold a pencil or crayon properly and at the same time tickle their creativity.

Expose your child to arts and crafts to develop motor skills. Aside from playing, activities involving paper cutting or folding can do wonders.

Study with your child. This makes them feel important.

Encourage play and socialization with other children. Kindergarten readiness also means getting along with children their age.

Don’t forget to reward your child after a practice kindergarten test or review. You don’t have to splurge on toys to do so because an honest compliment works just fine.

Make learning fun by providing colorful and attractive practice materials for your child to use while preparing for the test.

These tips are very useful in helping you get your child ready for a kindergarten test. You can always check out sites like http://havefunteaching.com/worksheets/test-practice/kindergarten-test-practice/ for some materials.
