Last-Minute NYC G&T Test Prep
posted by Karen Quinn, The Testing Mom - December 29th, 2014
For parents facing the NYC G&T test, the end of the holiday season means the beginning of an even more frantic, jam-packed time of year: the countdown to the New York City gifted & talented admissions test. The test, which takes place in January, is super competitive and gets more so each year. For that reason, parents start preparing for the exam months or even years in advance.
For that reason, many parents who are just now beginning their preparations are prone to panic. This is understandable, since the stakes are high: only the very top performers on the test even have a shot at making it into the gifted program. However, if you’re just now beginning to prepare for the test, it’s important to keep your cool, as your anxiety can rub off on your child and actually affect their performance negatively.
The key to successful prep for the NYC G&T test is to start off slow and begin with easy questions. Spend 5 to 10 minutes preparing with the very easiest questions to build your child’s confidence and attention span. Once your child is in the swing of things, increase the length of time that you spend practicing and begin to work with questions geared more toward their age level.
The good news is that TestingMom.com has an entire section on our site devoted to the NYC G&T test, with lots of practice questions geared directly toward the test. The New York City test is made up of practice questions for the NNAT® test and OLSAT® test, so those are the materials included in our NYC G&T section.
Here are just a few practice questions that show the kinds of material your child will face on the test:
Parent, tell your child this: “Look at this puzzle.” Point to the empty box and say, “Something is missing.” Point to the answer choices and say, “Which of these answer choices goes here?” Point back to the empty box when you say “here.”
Answer: A
Do you see these 4 boxes? In the top row the pictures go together in a certain way. Now look at the bottom row. Do you see the empty box? Which of the 4 pictures on the side goes with the picture in the bottom box the same way the 2 pictures in the top row go together?
Answer: C
