TestingMom Monitors NYC Gifted & Talented Program Updates
Each year, families applying to the New York City Gifted and Talented Program eagerly await updates from the New York City Department of Education regarding testing procedures, application timelines, eligibility requirements, and admissions policies.
Back in 2011, TestingMom closely monitored the Department of Education website to help parents stay informed about changes affecting gifted and talented admissions. At that time, the DOE had indicated that updated gifted and talented handbooks would be available online by the end of September, providing families with important information about the upcoming admissions cycle.
Many parents were especially concerned about potential changes to the OLSAT, which was widely used in the gifted admissions process. After reviewing the available information, we found no indication that major changes to the assessment were planned. However, as with any admissions cycle, families often had to wait until the official handbook was released before receiving final confirmation of testing procedures and requirements.
One lesson that remains true today is that gifted program requirements can change from year to year. Testing formats, eligibility rules, application deadlines, score requirements, and admissions policies may all be updated as school districts revise their programs.
Because of this, parents should make it a habit to:
- Check official district websites regularly
- Review updated admissions handbooks as soon as they become available
- Sign up for district email notifications
- Monitor application and testing deadlines carefully
- Verify testing requirements before beginning preparation
Staying informed helps families avoid surprises and ensures children have the best opportunity to participate in the admissions process.
