The NYC Gifted and Talented Test is Coming Up
posted by Karen Quinn, The Testing Mom - August 19th, 2014
Many parents are already asking about the NYC Gifted and Talented test, given that school is starting across the country, and will be in session in NYC in just a few short weeks.
The NYC Gifted and Talented test is a mix of questions from the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test ® (NNAT ® Test) and the Otis Lennon School Ability Test ® (OLSAT ® Test). Children must obtain a top score, and even children who score in the 99th percentile aren’t guaranteed a seat. That’s how competitive the NYC Gifted and Talented test has become in recent years.
Typically, children who score in the 99th percentile on the test are placed first. Since so many children obtain top scores in NYC, names are placed into a lottery and only some of these children make the cut. The only exception to the lottery system is the sibling preference. Under this policy, a child who scores in the 97th percentile or above has an advantage over non-siblings, even if those non-siblings scored in the 99th percentile.
In recent years, the NYC Gifted and Talented test consisted of 48 questions for the NNAT test, falling into the categories of pattern completion, reasoning by analogy, serial reasoning, and spatial visualization questions. The test consisted of 30 verbal questions for the OLSAT test, including following directions, aural reasoning, and arithmetic reasoning questions.
Because of the extremely competitive nature of the NYC Gifted and Talented program, it’s crucial that you get started as soon as you can with practice questions for the OLSAT test and NNAT test.
