Test and School Success Skills 6 Expert Ways to Get Your Kids Off Screens

6 Expert Ways to Get Your Kids Off Screens

A,Girl,With,A,Phone,In,Her,Hands. Open book on table.

Screens have become part of school, homework, friendships, and entertainment. That makes one of the hardest parenting jobs even harder: helping your child know when technology is useful – and when it is taking over.

The goal is to help your child become the one making the decisions, instead of letting notifications, games, videos, group chats, and endless scrolling decide where their attention goes.

Start With These 3 Strategies

1. Ask, “What am I using this for?”

Before your child opens a phone, tablet, or computer, have them name the job. Are they checking an assignment? Writing a paragraph? Looking up a science term? Messaging a classmate about a group project? Or just taking a break?

That one question creates a moment of intention before the screen takes over. A child who opens a laptop to “finish the math worksheet” is less likely to drift into YouTube or a group chat than a child who simply opens the laptop.

Introducing TestingMom’s Test and School Success Skills

TestingMom’s Test and School Success Skills is a new parent-led program for students in grades 2–8.

The full product includes 51 learning modules that help parents teach the skills behind strong school performance: test-taking, studying, focus, homework, organization, time management, note-taking, school pressure, and more.

Each module includes:

A 20-minute parent-child lesson

Clear, structured, age-appropriate content you can do at home.

A How-To video for parents

So you know how to teach the skill without turning it into a lecture.

A printable cheat sheet

A simple tool to reinforce the skill during the week.

This is practical academic skill-building for parents who take school seriously.

2. Separate school technology from entertainment technology

The same computer that contains Google Classroom may also contain games, videos, social media, and dozens of open tabs. Whenever possible, make school tools easier to see and entertainment harder to reach.

That might mean using a separate school browser profile, closing every tab except the assignment, keeping games off a school device, or moving entertainment apps away from the home screen.

3. Build tech-free starting and ending points

Many screen problems happen at predictable transition times: when homework begins, when homework ends, before school, and before bed.

Choose a few moments when technology automatically goes away. For example: no phone during the first 10 minutes of homework, no social media while packing for school, or no phone in bed after lights out. Clear routines reduce the need to renegotiate screen use every night.

The Bigger Goal: Teach Judgment, Not Just Screen-Time Rules

Counting screen minutes can be useful, but it does not teach a child how to make good decisions when a parent is not standing nearby.

A healthier long-term skill is learning to notice what technology is doing. Is it helping with school? Making it easier to stay organized? Providing a reasonable break? Or is it delaying homework, pushing bedtime later, damaging focus, or leaving your child irritated and overstimulated?

That is the skill behind TestingMom’s Healthy Relationship With Technology lesson: helping children use technology with purpose instead of being pulled around by it.

What Else Does the Technology Module Teach?

The full lesson includes six strategies. In addition to the three above, your child learns how to:

  • Notice what technology does to mood and energy – including which apps leave them focused and refreshed versus distracted, anxious, irritated, or too tired to work.
  • Use technology to support school systems – with calendars, reminders, folders, to-do lists, flashcards, and school learning platforms.
  • Review and reset when technology starts taking over – using warning signs such as later bedtimes, longer homework, slipping grades, reduced reading, or increasing family arguments.

The lesson also includes a simple “Tech Traffic Light” activity that helps children sort their own technology use into Green, Yellow, and Red categories – then choose one habit to improve.
