Why Your Kid Has No Sense of Time—and What to Do About It

Your child says they’ll be ready in five minutes. Fifteen minutes later, they still can’t find their shoes, their backpack isn’t packed, and now everyone is late.
Or maybe the same thing happens at school. They wait until the bell rings to gather materials, walk into class unprepared, or start a test or assignment already feeling rushed.
For many kids, the problem is not that they do not care about being on time. They have not yet learned how to work backward, estimate transitions, and build routines that make “ready” happen before the last second.
The Skill Behind Being on Time
Being ready at a specific time takes more than watching the clock. A child has to know what needs to happen first, remember the materials they need, stop what they are doing, and leave enough time for the transition.
That is why reminders like “Hurry up!” or “We’re leaving in five minutes!” often do not fix the problem. Kids need a system they can learn and repeat.
Introducing TestingMom’s Test and School Success Skills
TestingMom’s Test and School Success Skills is a new parent-led program for students in grades 2–8.
The full product includes 51 learning modules that help parents teach the skills behind strong school performance: test-taking, studying, focus, homework, organization, time management, note-taking, school pressure, and more.
Each module includes:
A 20-minute parent-child lesson
Clear, structured, age-appropriate content you can do at home.
A How-To video for parents
So you know how to teach the skill without turning it into a lecture.
A printable cheat sheet
A simple tool to reinforce the skill during the week.
This is practical academic skill-building for parents who take school seriously.
Try These Strategies
Work backward from the time you need to be ready
If your child needs to leave for school at 7:35, start with 7:35 and work backward. When do shoes need to be on? When should breakfast be finished? When should the backpack already be packed?
The same strategy works at school. If science lab starts at 10:15, your child can work backward so goggles, notebook, pencil, and directions are ready before class begins.
Make a ready-to-go checklist
Rushed kids often rely on memory at exactly the moment when memory is least reliable. A short checklist can define what “ready” actually means.
- Chromebook and charger
- Homework folder
- Notebook and pencil case
- Lunch or water bottle
Once the list is consistent, your child does not have to reinvent the routine every morning.
Build in a transition buffer
Kids often underestimate how long transitions take. Walking to class, stopping at a locker, finding a seat, opening materials, and getting settled all take time.
A two-minute buffer can be the difference between arriving prepared and arriving stressed.

The Most Important Shift for Parents
Instead of managing every minute for your child, help them build a repeatable system.
Pick one moment that regularly goes badly—leaving for school, packing up homework, getting ready for class—and create a routine around it.
Over time, the routine should do more of the work so you have to do less reminding.
What the Being Ready at a Specific Time Module Teaches
The full lesson helps children understand why they feel rushed and practice concrete ways to be prepared before the pressure starts.
Students learn how to:
- Work backward from the time they need to be ready.
- Make a ready-to-go checklist.
- Prepare materials before a transition starts.
- Build in a small transition buffer.
- Put distractions away until they are ready.
The lesson also helps parents identify one recurring problem time and build a simple routine around it, whether that is a school morning, class transition, homework session, or an important test day.
School Success Skills from TestingMom helps parents teach the academic habits, learning strategies, and school routines that strong students use every day.

Why This Matters for School
Being late or unprepared can create problems that have nothing to do with how smart a child is.
- Homework gets left at home.
- A Chromebook is not charged.
- A student walks into class without the right materials.
- A child begins a test already flustered.
Simple systems can reduce those avoidable problems and help children start schoolwork with more confidence and less panic.

Start With the Moment That Always Goes Wrong
Maybe it is getting out the door in the morning. Maybe it is packing up homework. Maybe it is getting to class with the right materials.
Choose one recurring problem, teach one system, and practice it until your child can do more of it independently.
