6 Proven Study Methods

Many students think studying means rereading notes, highlighting a textbook, or staring at the same material for a long time. But some study methods are much more effective than others. Over a century of cognitive and learning science proves it.
The strongest methods make the brain do something with the information: recall it, reorganize it, apply it, mix it with other material, or explain it in a new way.
That is the difference between simply spending time studying and actually learning.
Introducing TestingMom’s Test and School Success Skills
TestingMom’s Test and School Success Skills is a new parent-led program for students in grades 2–8.
The full product includes 51 learning modules that help parents teach the skills behind strong school performance: test-taking, studying, focus, homework, organization, time management, note-taking, school pressure, and more.
Each module includes:
A 20-minute parent-child lesson
Clear, structured, age-appropriate content you can do at home.
A How-To video for parents
So you know how to teach the skill without turning it into a lecture.
A printable cheat sheet
A simple tool to reinforce the skill during the week.
This is practical academic skill-building for parents who take school seriously.
Here Are Three Proven Study Methods to Try Right Away
1. Test Practice
Practice questions are one of the strongest ways to prepare for a test – especially when your child reviews the questions they missed and learns why the correct answer is right.
Taking a practice test alone is not enough. Learning happens when students study their mistakes, so they are more likely to get that type of question right next time.
2. Spaced Repetition
Cramming the night before a test may feel efficient, but spreading study across several days gives the brain more chances to strengthen the memory.
For example, a student might study for 45 minutes early in the week, then do two shorter 15-minute reviews before Test Day. The study sessions become shorter and more spaced out as the test gets closer.
3. Chunking
When students have a large amount of information to remember, breaking it into meaningful groups can make it easier to learn.
Instead of trying to memorize ten separate facts, a student might organize them into three categories. The information becomes easier to understand, easier to recall, and easier to study.
Test and School Success Skills by TestingMom helps parents teach practical academic skills like studying, test-taking, focus, organization, time management, procrastination, self-advocacy, and more.
School Success Skills from TestingMom helps parents teach the academic habits, learning strategies, and school routines that strong students use every day.

Get StartedThe Other Three Methods
The full lesson in Test and School Success Skills by TestingMom also teaches three more powerful ways to study:
4. Mixing Problems (Interleaving)
Students practice different types of problems in the same study session, so they have to recognize which strategy to use instead of repeating the same type of question over and over.
5. Dual Coding
Students combine words with pictures, diagrams, timelines, or other visuals. Using both forms of information can make difficult material easier to understand and remember.
6. Retrieval Practice
Instead of looking at the answer again, students practice pulling information out of memory. Flashcards, explaining a topic without notes, drawing a diagram from memory, or writing down everything they remember are all forms of retrieval practice.
The lesson gives parents examples, discussion questions, and ways to help their child try each method without attempting to master everything at once.
School Success Skills from TestingMom helps parents teach the academic habits, learning strategies, and school routines that strong students use every day.

Why Parents Need This
Parents often say, “Go study for your test.”
But most parents were never taught the difference between effective studying and simply spending more time with the material.
A child may reread the same chapter three times and feel productive while learning less than they would from a shorter session of practice questions and retrieval.
Test and School Success Skills by TestingMom gives parents concrete strategies they can teach at home so “study more” becomes “here is how to study better.”
