Emphasize Listening, Focus, and Perseverance
Audio training session 5 of 6
Listen to the full training session from The Testing Mom about “Emphasize Listening, Focus, and Perseverance.”
Build focus, attention, and test stamina
- Working with a timer, increase the length of your practice sessions little by little.
- Keep practicing until your child gets 10 questions right in a row.
- With older students, let them correct their own test and find their own mistakes.
- Play concentration games — for example, ask your child to clap every time the drums play in a song they are listening to.
- Use HearBuilder from TestingMom’s Skill Building Academy to help build listening skills.
- On test day, make sure your child has slept well and has a good breakfast.
Build perseverance
- Read books about perseverance (The Little Engine That Could), and listen to songs about perseverance (Shakira’s “Try Everything” from Zootopia).
- Teach a mantra like “Try, try again” or “Don’t give up.”
- If things get hard, take a break and go back to easier questions.
- Teach your child persistence even when they are feeling discouraged or tired.
- Praise them when they are persevering.
