Build focus, attention, and test stamina

  • Working with a timer, increase the length of your practice sessions little by little.
  • Keep practicing until your child gets 10 questions right in a row.
  • With older students, let them correct their own test and find their own mistakes.
  • Play concentration games — for example, ask your child to clap every time the drums play in a song they are listening to.
  • Use HearBuilder from TestingMom’s Skill Building Academy to help build listening skills.
  • On test day, make sure your child has slept well and has a good breakfast.

Build perseverance

  • Read books about perseverance (The Little Engine That Could), and listen to songs about perseverance (Shakira’s “Try Everything” from Zootopia).
  • Teach a mantra like “Try, try again” or “Don’t give up.”
  • If things get hard, take a break and go back to easier questions.
  • Teach your child persistence even when they are feeling discouraged or tired.
  • Praise them when they are persevering.
