How SAT Scores Work

The digital SAT is scored on a scale of 400-1600. A student’s total score is the sum of two section scores:

  • Reading and Writing: 200–800
  • Math: 200–800
  • Total SAT Score: 400–1600

For example, a student who earns a 650 in Reading and Writing and a 700 in Math would receive a total SAT score of 1350.

How Does Digital SAT Scoring Work?

The digital SAT uses multistage adaptive testing, which means scoring is more complex than simply counting how many questions a student answers correctly.

Both Reading and Writing and Math contain two modules. The first module includes questions of varying difficulty. A student’s performance on the first module helps determine the general difficulty of the questions presented in the second module.

A student’s section score is based on performance across both modules.

College Board uses a scoring model that considers several factors, including characteristics of the questions a student answers correctly or incorrectly, such as their difficulty.

As a result, two students who answer the same number of questions correctly can receive different section scores.

Does Every SAT Question Count Toward the Score?

Not necessarily.

Each SAT module includes two pretest questions that the College Board is evaluating for possible use on future tests. These questions do not count toward a student’s score.

Students are not told which questions are pretest questions, so they should approach every question as though it counts.

Is There a Penalty for Guessing on the SAT?

There is no traditional guessing penalty for incorrect answers.

Students should try to answer every question rather than intentionally leaving questions blank. If a student is unsure, eliminating one or more incorrect answer choices before making a reasonable guess can improve the chances of choosing the correct answer.

What Scores Appear on an SAT Score Report?

A student’s SAT score report includes three primary scores:

SAT ScoreScore Range
Reading and Writing200–800
Math200–800
Total Score400–1600

Students also receive additional information that can help them understand their performance.

What Are SAT Knowledge and Skills Scores?

The current digital SAT no longer reports the old subscores and cross-test scores used with the previous paper SAT.

Instead, the score report includes a Knowledge and Skills section showing performance across eight content areas.

Reading and Writing

  • Information and Ideas
  • Craft and Structure
  • Expression of Ideas
  • Standard English Conventions

Math

  • Algebra
  • Advanced Math
  • Problem-Solving and Data Analysis
  • Geometry and Trigonometry

The report provides a visual indication of performance within each content area. This information can help students identify strengths and areas where additional practice may be useful.

What Does the SAT Score Range Mean?

A student’s score report also includes a score range.

No standardized test can measure a student’s abilities with perfect precision. The score range shows how much a student’s score would likely vary if the student took a different administration of the SAT under identical conditions.

This helps students and families understand that an SAT score should not be viewed as a perfectly exact measurement of ability.

What Do SAT Percentiles Mean?

SAT score reports also include percentile information.

A percentile shows how a student’s score compares with the scores of other students in the relevant comparison group.

For example, if a student has a percentile rank of 75, the student’s score was equal to or higher than the scores of approximately 75% of students in that comparison group.

A percentile is not the same as the percentage of questions answered correctly.

What Are the SAT College and Career Readiness Benchmarks?

College Board also provides College and Career Readiness Benchmarks for the SAT.

The current benchmarks are:

  • Reading and Writing: 480
  • Math: 530

College Board uses these benchmarks to indicate whether a student is on track for college and career readiness in the corresponding subject area.

Benchmarks are different from college admissions requirements. A particular college may have typical SAT scores that are considerably higher or lower than these benchmarks.

What Is a Good SAT Score?

There is no single SAT score that is “good” for every student.

The most useful target score depends on the colleges and universities a student is considering. Students should research the SAT score ranges reported by the schools on their college list.

A score that is competitive for admission at one school may be below or above the typical range at another.

Does the SAT Essay Affect the Total Score?

The SAT Essay is not part of the standard weekend SAT.

In states where the Essay is included as part of an SAT School Day administration, Essay scores are reported separately and are not included in the student’s 400–1600 total SAT score.

How Can Students Use Their SAT Score Report?

A score report can do more than provide a total score.

Students can use their results to:

  1. Compare their scores with the ranges reported by colleges they are considering.
  2. Identify stronger and weaker content areas.
  3. Determine which Reading and Writing or Math skills need additional practice.
  4. Compare future SAT results to measure progress.
  5. Decide whether taking the SAT again may be worthwhile.

Rather than focusing only on the total score, students preparing to retake the SAT should closely review their Knowledge and Skills performance to determine where targeted practice will have the greatest benefit.
