Forsyth County Gifted and Talented Testing

Forsyth County Schools does not offer much information about its gifted program. They do say that their program focuses on developing critical thinking and research skills. Teachers use differentiation techniques while teaching to ensure students are challenged.

Students may be referred for consideration for the gifted program by teachers, parents, themselves, or anyone who is familiar with their abilities. Students are also screened using standardized tests. A qualifying score on the test automatically refers the student for further testing and consideration.

Students are tested in four areas: mental ability, achievement, motivation, and creativity. The district does not provide the specific tests used in each area; however, the CogAT is typically used for mental ability, the Iowa Basic Skills Assessments for achievement, and the Torrance for creativity. Having your child practice with questions from these tests will prepare them for these different categories.

There are two ways to qualify for the Forsyth County gifted program

Option A

• K-2
  • 99th percentile composite score on a nationally age-normed mental abilities test plus
  • 90th percentile or higher on a nationally norm-referenced achievement test.
• 3-5:
  • 96th percentile composite score on the nationally age-normed mental abilities test plus
  • 90th percentile or higher on a nationally normed achievement test

Option B (Students must have qualifying scores in three of the four areas)

• K-5:
  • 96th percentile on the mental abilities test
  • 90th percentile or higher on a standardized achievement test
  • 90th percentile on the motivation test
  • 90th percentile on creativity test

My son is 8 years old. He’s scored good every class test but he is not getting gifted program. I need more info regarding this.

Selvi, Since your son attends Forsyth County Schools in Georgia, we were able to look more closely at the district’s gifted identification process.
Doing very well on classroom tests is certainly encouraging, but Forsyth County does not identify students for gifted services based on classroom grades alone. Students are evaluated using specific criteria established by Forsyth County Schools and the Georgia Department of Education.
The district considers four areas when evaluating students for gifted services: Mental Ability, Achievement, Creativity, and Motivation.
Students may qualify through a combination of mental ability and achievement scores or by meeting the requirements in three of these four areas.
Forsyth County also uses i-Ready Reading and Math assessments as part of its universal screening process. High scores on these assessments may result in an automatic referral for gifted consideration. However, parents may also refer their own child for consideration.
We recommend contacting the Gifted Coordinator at your son’s school and asking:
Has my son already been considered by the Gifted Eligibility Team?
What were his most recent i-Ready Reading and Math national percentile scores?
Has he previously completed any gifted eligibility testing, and can I receive a copy of those results?
If he has not been referred, how can I submit a parent referral for gifted consideration?
This should help you determine whether your son has not yet been evaluated, was evaluated but did not meet one or more of the eligibility requirements, or may be eligible for additional testing.
